You may also need to enable one or more devices under MC options for Remote Control. If Windows Media Center starts when you press the Green Button, you can check the box under Theater View options called "Disable Windows Media Center.
On Vista and Windows 7, no device driver should be required. HP has an XP trouble shooting page that may also be helpful. Then unplug the USB cable from the PC, wait a few seconds, and plug it back in.
Under "Universal Serial Bus controllers", delete the entry for "eHome Infrared Receiver". If it is not working, go to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager. If you see a solid red light, it is not working. If it blinks once, the hardware is working. Point the remote at the receiver and press a button. When it finishes, you should see "eHome Infrared Receiver installed".
When you plug the USB cable in, Windows should be able to install the device. By default, most commands will execute a single "MCC" command within Media Center such as "Play", "Pause", "Mute", or "Fast forward".
